Krushna Chandra Ray is from Orissa, India and holds a Masters Degree in Odissi Classical and Hindustani Classical music from Chandigarh University. He commenced his study of music at the age of 10 under the late Balakrushna Das spending many years
learning in the Gurukul tradition where the student lives full time with the Guru.

 

He is an All India Radio and Television artist,
performer and composer and has spent 6 years undertaking research at the Odissi Research Centre in Bhubaneshwar, the capital of Orissa. Krushna is considered to be one of the best vocalists in Orissa and has performed for numerous music and dance festivals throughout India as well as overseas in Asia, Europe and South America, with many Odissi dance artists. Krushna
accompanied the Bharatam Dance Company in Melbourne in 1992 and 1997 for two major Odissi dance seasons, Where the
Eyes Go (1992, Victorian Arts Centre), and Odissi Odyssey (1997, National Theatre).

 

He has been commissioned by
Chandrabhanu for new compositions in Odissi for the last ten years and is at the forefront in the development of new music for the Geeta Govinda. With several CDs already to his credit, Krushna continues to record his Geeta Govinda series, while also
undertaking work as a musical and recording director for several artists in Orissa.

Since his arrival to live in Melbourne in 2006, he has commenced vocal music classes in Odissi and Hindustani music at the Chandrabhanu Bharatalaya Academy and in October 2007 presented 11 students in an excellent concert. In 2005, he received the Sri Khetra Mahotsava Award from theAcademy of Culture in Orissa, and in 2006 the Chandrabhanu Bharatalaya Academy presented him with the Choodamani Awardof Excellence for his contribution to Odissi dance music. More recently he received the 2009 Award for Odissi music from TheInternational Festival, Odissi Research Centre, Orissa; the 2010 INB Chintachethana Award (Govt award), and the 2010Bhubaneswar Festival Evergreen Award.
